Around the household, there are a number of fixtures
and appliances that use electricity: lights, the
air-conditioner, a microwave, the refrigerator, perhaps
an electric oven/range, a TV, one or two computers, cell
phone chargers, and so on...
When these appliances are plugged in, they draw
electricity from a giant network of power lines and
generation centers called the power grid.
Although some clean energy sources like wind, solar,
and geo-thermal springs contribute electricity to the
power grid, the majority of energy generated in the
United States is derived from coal, natural gas, nuclear
and hydro-electric sources.
Utility companies, like Southern California Edison,
manage, distribute, and provide electricity from this
power grid to your home.
Power is priced out using limits called Tiers. Each Tier is priced differently for different ranges. The more power you use the higher your Tier status. Tier's 1 and 2 are relatively close in price, but there is a large jump between Tiers 2 and 3. The purpose of a Solar PV System is to lower your power bill to a more manageable Tier as seen in the Case Study findings to the right. In many cases, a Solar PV System will Eliminate Your Electric Bill Completely
